2024 Digital Moves And Transitions Thread - Your Explorations In The World Of Digital Art

(REMINDERs - insert only URL link from the very top of your image page below when you Post Reply to save space for BUZzzz - don't use EMBED code. Follow the links to others’ works to comment and fave - show some love and support, rather than just looking at the image we’d see if EMBED codes are used.)
For 2024, I am combining the Digital Thread and the Transitions Thread into one - there are so many overlaps, it just seems logical!

Digital work comprises work you’ve created by hand with a digital pencil, such as in Procreate, or by modifying existing work, whether photos or paintings or drawings, by doing work on them using a filter or other method in a photo editing program like Photoshop, Affinity, or manipulating them in Procreate and similar digital drawing programs.

The latter fall into the category of being “transitional” art, transitioning between your traditional hand paintings/drawings/photography and bringing them into the digitally modified world. Because of this obvious cross-over, Laurel and I decided it would be easier for people to participate in conversations about these types of work if we combined them.

In this thread we will discuss and explore ways to create digital art. We can discuss techniques, challenges, software, and whatever else comes to mind that bears on this topic. We hope to encourage you to share your digital experiments and efforts, ask questions in case another artist can help you figure something out, and comment, share and LEARN.

NOTICE: HOT LINKS going cold!!
In Topic threads, a URL link to your image posts LIVE and clickable …but…will go DEAD cold and inactive IF you return to EDIT for any reason, although its text will remain. DOUBLE CHECK before you POST reply! FORGOT SOMETHING? POST a NEW reply, don’t edit the post with a hot link in it!

The piece I have used to represent this thread for now is one of my own earliest digital drawings using Procreate and an Apple Pencil on an iPad. It is a freehand drawing of a beautiful Forsythia, drawn from a reference photo I’ve had for years and from which I’ve done several watercolor paintings, as well!

This is a short kinetic sequence in video form: https://vimeo.com/898904741

TANGLES by REVAD 2024 from REVAD David Riley on Vimeo.

I saw these TANGLES in my work and thought of The Buzzz and Laurel in particular. As you may notice, I have stepped away from Premium again to create a limited situation and encourage me to focus on a single idea. The art for this post is off-site in my relatively stable Vimeo account. But the animation relates to what I am exploring here.

Anyway, think of this as my welcome to 2024 to you all. REVAD

PS. update: this now autoplays and loops.

Fun work, Dave, and definitely right up Laurel's alley! Tangles and neurographic feel! Happy New Year to you, as well!

That's what I thought Conni.

I am considering the math required to (programmatically) round the intersections, to make it really neurographic - it is not trivial..!

Conni Schaftenaar

I cannot even begin to fathom the math and programming required to do truly neurographic drawings using your methods - what a challenge!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!! It is SUNDAY, New Years Eve and I wish to thank everyone Moderators and Members for a WONDERful 2023…Let’s make 2024 an even more interesting time sharing our aesthetics in The BUZzz!
The moderator thread images look SOooo BEAUTIFUL! Please, I would love to feature the Moderator topic thread 2024 images in feature (even re-feature) on the homepage if you care to. Thanks so much!

I may never get there Conni. It is a back-burner project. There are other aspects of my CONNECT : TANGLE enquiry that will take precedence. By the way, I have messaged you a set of personal commitments to follow, if you accept my request to rejoin the group. I will accept whatever decision you make gracefully.

I agree with Laurel's comments on the moderator images. A happy new year to all..!

Hi, Dave, saw your FAA mail, sent you a welcome back response, and just saw your new signature on the Membership commitment thread - we're all good! Happy New Year!

Hello and HAPPY NEW YEAR DAVE!…I am FINALLY finished juggling while awaiting the final thread and am extending a Proper WELCOME BACK! I am SOooo excited by your kinetic sequence…my husband wanted exterior Christmas lights for the First time ever and so …we did that. We have a “Light ball” tangle of LEDs that light in the middle and cycle thru …kinetically…in warm white, multicolor with purple (of course)…then extends to a beautiful BRIGHT WHITE finale! PLEASE tell me that this will stay at the thread top for me to play thruout the year when I need a smile!! It is truly BRILLIANT. I only saw the arrow on return (battling an ophthalmological migraine today).
Happy 2024!

Laurel, everything on Vimeo is for the long term:

No reason this shouldn't remain here. Your light ball is fun.

Another stable space is my Wordpress archive:

Lots to view on both sites.

I'll share more in the threads, when appropriate.

For this sequence, I used the MacBook screen recorder to capture the sequence (created with my own Java code running in the https://processing.org development environment). Then iMovie to edit the length and add the titles.

That was the quick (and dirty) method.

Normally, I would get my code to write out each individual movie frame and then use iMovie to compile these into a moving image. This takes longer for (potentially) higher quality results. Or, more accurately, more control over the final quality.

PS. With 7 hexagons, and 15 unique ways to cross connect each one, there are 15^7 (170,859,375) possible patterns. Roughly 5.5 years to sequence them all, at 2 per second. Hence the short random selection.

I got in a bit of a TANGLE this afternoon...

...see what can happen when you get carried away with an idea.

I'm going to leave it there - for now. Time to go away and consider what next.

There are related prints available in my PIXELS shop at: https://by-revad.pixels.com.

Although, I am still working on a print resolution version of this grid. To be added soon...

Laurel Adams

Very interesting Dave…the moving lines over the stationary “hexagonal beehive” grid…FUN… I STILL fav the kinetic short that reminds me of the Star. Ok, so this isn’t very mathematical…however, the Star appears to be a “cookie cutter” design from the overall hexagonal grid?? ( blame the DOZENS of trays of holiday cookies for the nurses and friends and…I’m still with my head in the oven! ) If I am on track, …what if… you made various hexagonal “cookie cutter sculptures” from the grid and had them kinetically oscillating …en noire? Like Swarovski crystal …. I can SEE it in my mind’s eye but you have the “tech vision” and then you could infuse it with RGB colours and have a MOVING exhibit?? Is that even feasible?

A GHOST

I'm going to get a high resolution print file of a grid first. Something around the 9000x6000px mark. I also want it to be of whole hexagons only, with no cut in half hexagons at the edges. It will need a small border. The number of hexagons will be adjusted. There's probably a visual sweet spot somewhere between the two examples I have already shared (I also prefer the 7 hexagon 'cookie cutter' right now). Your cookie cutter metaphor is firmly stuck in my brain and will no doubt influence matters. I also have an urge to go 3D. The hexagons help there, with their six sides, as cubes have six surfaces. But, I am getting way ahead of myself. Working out the math, and then how to code it, takes a lot of time! There are lots of physical real-world outcome possibilities too. Can I have another life-time please!

A GHOST

For Laurel. The first 'cookie cutter' outcome. ;-)

A double post. So, let me say. These tiles were deliberately placed. Random does not come into it. I was definitely aiming to make a pattern. There are just two tile designs: the centre tile and the six rotations of the same tile. More on this later...

Laurel Adams

Thank you Dave for the first “cookie sculpture” on HEATHERed PURPLE! I hear those brain wheels spinning and see the neural sparks flying! This is gonna be an exciting year!!
Haha…I’m EXCITED you are thinking 3D…I was going to suggest that in my earlier text but thought that might be too “pushy”…
However, now that I see that’s in your wheelhouse, OMG…the field of quantum possibilities…that’s where I love to go! I’ve been watching too much Gaia tv of late. My husband and I are into this “Emersion conference” where one of the speakers/author, Caroline Cory, does “grid mapping” in tandem with Hertz sound waves; she researched-developed the algorithm for the three grids surrounding the earth, the grid points of which she suspects are mini black holes thru which Consciousness and other energetics move thru space-time. It was quite a “wild ride” of thought. What does this have to do with the “cookie cutter image” you might ask? Well, everything in her grid concept is triangular with hexagonal, decahedron, duodecahedron and even more complex “..dron” formations! She too started with a field of hexagons…3D …like you might be doing. And so, while I don’t pretend to understand the geometry from the mathematical formularies…I really do understand the interrelational concepts from an artistic perspective of BEAUTY! Your “projects” are not to be underestimated, Dave!
P.S. You just might get that “other lifetime” to live out in this one with the acceleration of timelines, magnetic shifts and expected radical increases in photonic flares during this and next year…just sayin’! Sciences like epigenetics are suggesting some WILDly exciting implications to unfold and mix into algorithmic patterns…and so, who knows? it just may be…

Laurel Adams

Ok Conni, I am leaving the advanced algorithmic techniques in Dave’s art…and am exploring baby steps in Laurelland digital-traditional transitions. Here is a recent, transitional art piece I completed for Only a Fine Day’s December EDIT contest…

https://fineartamerica.com/featured/its-a-wrap-laurel-adams.html

The box of Baci and blue bow were digitally hand painted Laurelland with syrup brush and smudge tool. I drag-dropped her digital snowflakes onto the bow for criteria compliance in her contest but used techniques gleaned in our interchanges, stemming from your guidance during last year. The warping tool has been a fun feature helping me …S..T..R..E..T..C..H.. MY IMAGINARIA…. Thank you, Conni for all you do for me, and for us ALL in this thread and in SO many ways in the BUZzz!..:-)

Dave - I love the moving art -- it is quite hypnotic. It sounds like you will be sticking with hexagons for awhile?

Laurel - Your It's a Wrap is fun and I love the bright blue.

I created the following piece to show to members of my art workshop. How I start with one photo - the mums in the upper left and using Corel PaintShop Pro ended up with final 'vase' in the lower right. Often things take many more steps, but this, I thought, worked as a demo.

While Laser Beam Fun took a really long time.

I am trying to build a portfolio of simplistic images on black backgrounds. Only working with my own images and Corel PaintShop

Two posts by way of summarising the available unique connection strategies across a hexagon. There is a brief explanation in each description.

15 unique tiles, become 5 unique tiles when rotations are removed:

Stylised as-if a totem in this last outcome.

Time now to consider what next...

PS. I do like that 'totem'. That may become my first physical outcome project!

I hear you, Dave, about the way that FAA decides how to organize our galleries; however, I will reiterate what I've said to you before - ignore what they do if you can't control it. You can control the order your images are in on your images tab, and, my experience has been, I can order my Collections the way I want and, for the most part, that seems to be the way they show up in the Shop tab. I personally don't care. I like the interactions on FAA, I have enjoyed contests, and I don't really expect sales, so what they choose to do in Shop means nothing to me. Find a way to just not pay attention to that stuff, and enjoy what you CAN do in FAA . . . and don't drop out!

CYPHER SPACE

I wasn't complaining Conni. It is what it is. But, it is not something I am willing to throw yet another $30 at.

Anyway, my CYPHER SPACE digital playground is now full with 24 public outcomes and 1 private. For posterity, here are the direct links to the web images, which should survive any future replacement/deletions.

- N E W - - - - - - - - - - - - -

FAA CODE 2024 :

001 : 1 : 4 | 002 : 1 : 4 | 003 : 1 : 4 | 004 : 1 : 4 | 1to4 : 1 : 4 |

SPECIAL EDITIONS :

PURPLE BUZzz : PURPLE BUZzz PATTERN

TRANSIENT :

0 : 1 | 1 : 1 | 2 : 1 | 3 : 1 | 5 : 1 | 8 : 1 | 13 : 1 | 21 : 1 | 34 : 1 | 55 : 1 | 89 : 1 | 144 : 1

These links can also be found on my ABOUT page.

The current plan is to leave the FAA CODE 2024 and SPECIAL EDITIONS outcomes alone - for as long as possible - and play with the TRANSiENT outcomes as new ideas occur, updating the title suffix number as I go.

Pushing the SYSTEM BEYOND DELETION is me doing exactly this:

"enjoy what you CAN do in FAA".

I have no intention of dropping out.

I hope some of you enjoy watching.

CYPHER SPACE

OK. An idea popped.

I have the one private image slot to play with.

I can use this for posting here.

Here goes.

This is a photo of a plot. Because it was drawn with pens, it has the feel of an analogue human made outcome. And yet, right up to the pen touching the paper it is purely digital. Even the stepper motors moving the pen are digital. The ink and paper may be analogue but everything else is digital.

STUDiO 1

As it happens, I sold this to a friend recently. By 'sold' I mean exchanged it for some help in raising a pergola in my garden. It is my first signed plotter outcome, and will be unique, this design will never be used again.

L A Feldstein

Dave - I fully understand you're not wanting to throw another $30 into FAA because of all the programming issues. It is wrong to me that they promote 'curate' your work when that is so obviously wrong. My Collections are all correct when I'm logged in; but going 'incognito' and everything is a very big mess. I have 'tickets' sent to Tech Support; sadly to no avail. Even the order of how my Collections appear is incorrect.

Sorry for the rant.

Can you keep setting up free accounts with slight name changes - Cypher Space 1, 2 etc?

CYPHER SPACE

That’s a possibility Liz. But, I’ll play here for a while and see what I can do. I can certainly keep overwriting the one image (changing the title), sharing the direct web image links, and all the linked images will all remain viewable from here. I’ll post STUDiO 2 soon as proof of concept.

I have totally given up linking to here from anywhere else. The messy broken site is not worthy of promotion.

Best to just have fun in this little free sandbox.

Conni Schaftenaar

congrats, Dave, on your sale/barter of the plotter piece - I think it's wonderful! I had wondered about the same thing Liz suggested - a variety of free accounts. I'd guess you could copy the links to things in an "alter ego" profile to post here under your Cypher Space ID. I also think it would be very confusing if you joined the group under multiple identities, so referencing other profile links would be the way to go, should you decide to test the waters with a 2nd free site.

CYPHER SPACE

I've had multiple accounts at a time before, but I always had one paying account as this felt like not stretching the free account agreement (I already had an unrestricted premium account, so another free account made no material difference). In any case, one, two or even three more free accounts doesn't really make a material difference to the limit, it would still be a very small number compared to the number of images I have available. So, I think it best to work within the one account restriction - for now.

CYPHER SPACE

Here is the proof of concept second transient image:

STUDiO 2

This is a 20 inch square ChromaLuxe die sublimation on aluminium print, a print I sourced directly from a print shop in Scotland (I believe it to be the print shop FAA use for their UK production). It cost somewhat more than if I had purchased it through FAA, but it is guaranteed and marked as ChromaLuxe, and it does start a direct relationship with the print shop. So, I see benefit in that. This print has a permanent location too, in my own home. I love the die sub prints, they are perfect for my cypher outcomes.

Conni Schaftenaar

yes, I love dye sub printing, too - the colors are so deep and, in my experience of printing my own work, true to the original high res scans I've made. Beautiful print, Dave!

CYPHER SPACE

Thanks Conni. My earliest die sub prints are now 15 years old and they look exactly the same as the day they arrived. They are very easy to look after too, very easy to keep clean and very tough. The only down side is, having no frame, the edges are easier to damage when transporting/handling - so care needed there.

CYPHER SPACE

To continue a train of thought.

My 'limited' FREE account does only have 25 images, of which 24 are currently available for POD sale.

But, from my ABOUT page you can already link to and view 156 of my images stored on the FAA servers.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. I have already identified the URLs of 12 other series of - at leat - 26 images each.

So, with some effort, I could link a further 780 images.

Plus, I know at one point I had over 3000 images on FAA.

If I can remember the titles and artist name I used, I could link to those too.

The question I have to ask myself is "how far do I want to take my DIGITAL ARCHEOLOGY dig?!

PS. I have added the EDGE versions of my FAA CODE 2021 series - my favourite outcomes from that series.

Conni Schaftenaar

I use a manufacturer here in the states which prints on fabrics (pillows, totes, pouches, etc), and on canvas and on metal, and they use dye sub printing on most, if not all of their substrates. I've done many types of things using them and the images are always great.

Meanwhile, glad you have links in your profile, Dave, to others of your outcomes - 3000 images, wow! I know you don't have that many re-linked, but you do have possibilities there!

L A Feldstein

I had to look up what dye sublimation was --

Dave - the Studio 2 image is absolutely gorgeous!

Glad you are hanging around.

Die sub is an interesting process.

There are now STUDIO 3 and 4, which are die sub prints of ARC GRAPH outcomes I had printed a couple of years ago.

STUDIO : 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 |

They remain in my collection.

PS. being high gloss, they took some effort to photograph. I had the camera lens poking through a black sheet so as to eliminate any reflections. I should have photographed the set up, but didn't. Next time I will.

L A Feldstein

Thanks Dave.

I thought I could help with your 'archeology' project. I've 'followed' you in all your various incarnations. But, in going through my 'following' artists only your most recent is there. Which is really weird because there are some artists that I know have left FAA and they still appear as someone I'm following but not you.......weird

CYPHER SPACE

A lovely thought Liz.

Me and 'weird' go together!

I just found an image from the biggest series I ever uploaded. Now I know the naming format, I could rediscover and link all 729 outcomes.

I have no plans to do that by hand, but I might spend the time to write a Python script to generate the HTML for me. 'might' is key, as I already have several other projects taking my time.

Laurel Adams

Dave, I don’t even pretend to understand all of the ins and outs of FAA machinations but I certainly echo Conni’s and L A’s statements: “Please don’t drop out…just have some fun”. Know your outcomes, iterations and kinetic shorts (I dearly miss my snowflake) make so many of us smile and invite us to enjoy your journey. If you decide to have more than one account, please make sure it follows our criteria of an avatar and a bio; …the “ghost” avatar did not have a bio and was one of the “independent artist” account types. Your CYPHER SPACE account features one of your images as your avatar and has a bio identifying you as REVAD so you are recognizable.

Again, thanks for adding to my birthday fun.

CYPHER SPACE

Laurel, the A GHOST account is a deleted account and can't have anything more than an avatar and name. It was in such a mess, due to system bugs, the only way to resolve the situation was to delete it.

CYPHER SPACE

...reconsidered.

CYPHER SPACE

As I rotate images through this free account, each one will be recorded as a direct image link in a BLOG post. This gives the possibility of comments that will survive beyond the image being rotated out of the 24 available slots. I am going to aim to post one new BLOG image each week day. So, it will take a few weeks to record the current 24 outcomes in this MEMORY VIEW. Check out the first two outcomes:

https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/cypher-space?tab=blog

Plus, the PRESS RELEASE tab will record my DIGITAL ARCHEOLOGY discoveries alongside regular snapshots of my ABOUT page. Press releases are system limited to two per week. There are two entries so far:

https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/cypher-space?tab=press

As I can now see a constructive way to use this free space, I have resurrected my @byRevad X account to connect with the wider audience. Here I will link the art pages as they change alongside an as-if gallery installed view. Again, as I write, there are two posts:

https://x.com/byRevad

The rotation of image slots will consider the level of interaction with each image. The greater the interaction the more likely the image is to remain in the main gallery.

To fit with this new plan, I have retitled the image slots. This has not negatively affected any direct image links in this thread or my image posts to the BUZzz. The plan appears to be working. I hope and expect relative stability!

Dave, what beautiful iterations in your blog!!…you certainly are creative in presenting your work for viewing. I was unable to comment but I wanted you to hear how beautiful they are! Thanks for keeping something which allows you to PLAY and intershare in our BUZzz discussions, Dave.

CYPHER SPACE

Thanks Laurel.

I am confused. Are you saying you couldn't comment on the blog? Or, couldn't comment on the full image that is linked using the [more info] button?

The [more info] button image is just the bare image, it is not wrapped in a html page, so definitely no comments there.

But, you should be able to comment on the blog, I just did so on one of yours,

If my blogs can't receive comments then this strategy for image viewing and commenting is a bust!!

I need to know if blog commenting works on this account before I commit any more time?

CYPHER SPACE

It would also be useful to know if blog comments appear in ACTIVITY.

If they don't, then there is no reliable way to communicate using blog comments. If I am not informed of comments, then how can I respond?

Is this yet another bit of half baked system coding? I hope not..!
